About Us

We are a long established custom picture framing business based in Hornsby, New South Wales.

We are passionate about conservation, colour and design and how we can make your special piece of art look even more beautiful once framed with us. At In The Picture, we pride ourselves on that hard to find personable, old fashioned customer service. We take the time, listen to your ideas, give you some options to consider and design your finished product, with you, your style and home in mind. Our policy is to only release work, that we would accept ourselves. And for a team that is trained to the millimetre, the standard is very high! Our custom framing is handmade in our Hornsby studio, by the craftspeople you speak to during the consultation. As part of our service we offer complimentary colour and product consultations and quotes. These quotes are valid for 3 months. We welcome any feedback you may have and look forward to framing your next special something.

OUR STORY

“For me good art does nothing more than fill a blank wall… Great art on the other hand inspires, challenges and ultimately teaches us about the world we live in and how we play a small role within it. Adding a little sparkle along the way by framing it perfectly doesn’t hurt either.”

If skipping Maths and English class throughout my school years (which I feel some regret over now 😉 ) to free up more time in the art room constitutes creative passion, then it’s safe to say I am extremely passionate about creativity. Since the day I could hold a coloured pencil or paintbrush, I’ve had a strong affiliation with the world of design and have found ways to absorb myself in it ever since.

I believe great design starts in the home and should appear effortless, authentic and reflect the passions of the people that reside within it. Whether you dedicate a wall to generations of family photographs; hang an historical heirloom in pride of place, or rest your head upon your pillow under a calming landscape… for it to work, it has to be appropriate for the space and framed perfectly, or the balance in the room shifts.

Art will always remain unarguably subjective. But no matter the type of art, if it’s framed well, does far more in my opinion than simply fill a blank wall. It cleverly zones a space within the home. It gives a room or hallway purpose and perspective. It creates drama in an entry or foyer and ultimately sets the tone of the environment we call home.

It’s because of this synergy to the interior that a sub branch within the company was created in 2013. By blending the 2 worlds of Art and Interiors together, we’ve been able to provide additional and complimentary services to our customers. Offering direction and advise in soft furnishings, lighting, furniture and commissioned pieces, has proven popular amongst our regular clientele who have expressed it’s been a welcomed addition to our business.

This vision has had a huge impact on how the overall growth at In The Picture has evolved. Over the past 2 decades we’ve chosen to regularly interact with our clientele by providing them with unique customer experiences including;
– Creative workshops – “How to blend the world or art and interiors”
– Exhibitions supporting local artists
– VIP product launches on new products and services
– “An evening with the artist” – Showcasing local talent
– Jenny’s “Art & Interior tips and tricks”

How it all began…

I’ve been involved in this business since 1995. After commissioning my HSC photography works to be framed, a chance discussion resulted in my being offered a casual position as a custom picture framer.

At the time I was studying Design at Hornsby Tafe. As it turned out, the work I was doing gave me the opportunity to see how framing, when done well, could improve or enhance an artwork. Over the next 4 years I continued my studies, centred around design, at the School of Colour and Design; the Whitehouse School of Fashion and Enmore Design College whilst learning the art of framing.

I enjoyed the creative work and the practical application of my studies so much that when an opportunity arose to become more substantially involved in the business, I decided to take the plunge and become Director and as a result, been at the helm of the business since 2000.

The creative craftspeople who make up In The Picture team are equally passionate and diverse in their own creative skills and qualifications. Among them are hand-quilters, pattern-makers, illustrators and textile-makers and graphic designers.

We focus on quality not quantity; on fine workmanship rather than the disposable. And we always try to create a great customer experience. We hope our passion for all things art and design rubs off on you too. We look forward to meeting you, hearing your artwork stories and framing your special pieces…
